Reconnecting Through Yoga and Breathwork

Supporting My Body Through Postpartum and Corporate Challenges with Alternative Medicine

After the birth of my fourth child, my body felt like it was waging a silent rebellion. I was managing a demanding corporate career, parenting four children, and navigating physical ailments like fibromyalgia and autoimmune issues. Traditional medicine offered little relief—it treated the symptoms but not the underlying imbalance. That's when I turned to alternative medicine, and it became a cornerstone of my healing journey.

One of the most transformative practices was mind-body integration through yoga and breathwork. These practices helped me reconnect with my body in a deeply healing way. By combining movement and intentional breathing, I was able to reduce chronic pain, improve circulation, and calm my nervous system—especially during high-stress workdays.

Another essential tool was energy healing and sound therapy, which brought me into a state of deep relaxation and allowed me to process the emotional toll of balancing work and motherhood. These practices helped me release stored tension and emotional blocks, which I didn't realize were amplifying my physical symptoms.

Nutritional therapy and anti-inflammatory eating became a daily ritual. I focused on a plant-based, whole-foods approach that fueled my body while reducing inflammation. I found that simple changes, like incorporating turmeric tea or green smoothies, had a profound impact on my energy levels and overall resilience.

The most profound shift came through sacred rituals like meditation and journaling, which allowed me to process my emotions and reconnect with my inner self. I would wake up early—before my corporate meetings or the chaos of parenting began—and dedicate 7 minutes to meditation and reflection. This daily ritual gave me clarity, balance, and the space to be present for my family and career.

These practices didn't just heal my body; they illuminated the path to my true calling. They became the foundation for the Soul Illumination Method(R), a holistic framework I now use to help others achieve balance, abundance, and well-being in their lives.

For anyone navigating a major life transition—whether it's postpartum, menopause, or the demands of corporate life—alternative medicine can offer powerful tools for healing and transformation. My advice? Start with curiosity and self-compassion. Healing is a journey, not a destination, and the practices that work for you will evolve as you do.

Balancing Body After Birth Control

I have used alternative medicine throughout most of my adult life. But one instance that really stands out to me was when I decided to come off birth control pills/patches/rings. My goal was not to become pregnant but instead to recalibrate my body back to its natural state. Hormonal birth control changes our bodies and I did not realize the side effects I was experiencing as a result. I thought they were 'normal'.

When I made this decision, I worked with a holistic-minded chiropractor who helped me with energy healing, liver support, and detoxification. I also worked with a naturopathic doctor who helped to naturally balance nutrient deficiencies that were caused by the pill. I was working on my Master's Degree in Holistic Nutrition at the time, so I created a meal plan that focused on liver support and detoxification. I also began a restorative yoga practice and started using aromatherapy to help with stress management and overall support of my body.

Regaining control of my body was quite a process, but without the help of these alternative therapies, I would not have reached my goal of naturally balancing my body. And to this day, my primary care doctor continues to push birth control pills on me during my yearly visits. Western medicine does not understand how harmful something like the long-term use of birth control pills can be to a woman's body and, unfortunately, doesn't always seem to support us when we choose not to go with the 'norms.'

Using Cannabis for Menopause Relief

As I've moved through the seasons of my life, especially into aging, I've leaned heavily on alternative medicine to support my body, mind, and spirit. One practice that's been a cornerstone for me is the use of cannabis plant medicine. It's been a game-changer for managing pain, reducing inflammation, and promoting restful sleep, especially after intense mountain biking adventures or long days editing videos.

Cannabis has also helped me navigate the hormonal shifts of menopause. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by insomnia or mood swings, I found balance through tinctures and edibles tailored for relaxation and hormonal support. This, combined with yoga, meditation, and a nutrient-rich diet, has kept me feeling vibrant and grounded.

Two particularly powerful moments came after I won the Sagebrush Safari 20-mile grueling mountain bike race at 68 and again at 69. My body definitely felt the effort, but by integrating cannabis topicals and tinctures with massage and deep breathing exercises, I was able to recover quickly and keep doing what I love.

For me, alternative medicine isn't just about treating symptoms—it's a lifestyle of honoring my body's natural rhythms and choosing practices that help me thrive. It's a path I'll always walk with gratitude.

Alternative Medicine During Pregnancy

During my two pregnancies, alternative medicine played a big role in keeping me balanced and comfortable:

1. Acupuncture: Helped reduce nausea and boost energy, especially in the first trimester.

2. Prenatal Yoga: Eased back pain, improved flexibility, and provided breathing techniques I used during labor.

3. Herbal Teas: Ginger tea for nausea and chamomile (in moderation) for better sleep.

4. Essential Oils: Lavender for stress and citrus scents for energy.

5. Nourishing Foods: Turmeric, ginger, and superfoods like spinach and chia seeds supported my health and my baby's development.

These simple practices, alongside traditional prenatal care, made both pregnancies more manageable and peaceful.

Acupuncture and Herbs for Aging

In order to promote my general well-being during a significant life shift like aging, I resorted to complementary and alternative medical techniques like acupuncture and herbal supplements. As my body changed, acupuncture became more and more crucial in helping me manage stress and enhance the quality of my sleep. Incorporating adaptogenic herbs like turmeric and ashwagandha into my daily routine also helped to lower inflammation and boost my energy levels. In addition to their physical advantages, these exercises promoted resilience and equilibrium during a period of change. I was able to naturally and sustainably address the mental and physical components of aging thanks to alternative medicine's holistic approach.
