Massage Therapy Enhances Performance and Wellness
One alternative medicine practice which I find great value in is seeing a massage therapist every two weeks. Having another professional's set of hands on my body to assess and address little things that might be creeping up but not symptomatic to me yet. It's part performance enhancement and part preventative maintenance so I can continue performing my own physically demanding work as a chiropractor, as well as keeping up with a workout routine and recreating with my family on weekends. Massage therapy also provides other benefits such as supporting immune system function through improved lymphatic circulation, as well as the general calming effect that helps regulate the autonomic nervous system. Of course, I also see my own chiropractor weekly, for the benefits of being well adjusted, but that's a topic for another time.

Brainspotting. This therapy modality is relatively new--developed in 2003. Its premise is where you look affects how you feel. By finding an eye position in conjunction with a body sensation, you can locate where past memories, trauma, and emotions are stored. By tapping into this location, you can actually and effectively heal trauma. The best way to describe the results is that it turns down the volume of strong feelings or emotions you have around a particular event. Another amazing thing about brainspotting is that you don't need to talk to process difficult emotions or memories. In fact, much of the session may be done in silence. (As a client, you can talk as much or as little as you want to.) Brainspotting can also help you expand into becoming a version of your best self. Perhaps you want to feel content, at peace, or happy. By honing in on these emotions, brainspotting can help you achieve (reasonable and realistic) your goals. Maybe you have a block toward exercising. Brainspotting can help remove that block. Perhaps you want to boost your performance in a certain area. Brainspotting can help with physical or creative performances. The more I'm learning about brainspotting, the more I'm realizing there is no limit to what brainspotting can help with. It is as close to a magic wand that I have ever found in the therapy/healing realm.

Adding hot and cold therapy to my routine has been a total game-changer-not just for recovering physically but for clearing my head too. Jumping between an ice bath and a sauna does wonders for muscle soreness and stress. It's like hitting the reset button for my whole system, and it gives me the energy and focus to tackle everything else in life!
